Do you remember the feeling of booting up your brand new Mac computer? Everything was fresh, worked as it should, and booted up within seconds. As the months or years go by and with more apps, programs, and software loaded onto your computer, you notice your computer takes more than minutes to boot up.
Or browsing through programs seems is sluggish and slow, and it’s hard to be productive.
Replacement is expensive, but the good news is that you can do some things to speed up your slow Mac. In this article, we are going over the top tips to get your Mac computer.
What Causes a Slow Mac?
Mac speeds can decrease for many reasons. The top reasons are caused by overused hard drive storage, applications that require too much CPU power, and a system lacking the proper OS updates. Below are some of the common issues that are slowing your Mac computer down.
Locate CPU-Hungry Processes
Some apps require more CPU power than others. This can slow your Mac down dramatically and can make productivity almost nonexistent.
What you can do is open up your Activity monitor and see what programs are causing any slowdowns. If you find programs that use a lot of CPU that you aren’t using often, be sure to uninstall them or end their use while using your Mac.
Manage Your Startup Settings
A clean startup can help speed up a slow Mac. When your computer boots, there is a list of programs that automatically start up that you probably don’t need. Eliminating these programs from starting up from a boot can increase your computer’s speed.
Go to System Preferences, click on Users and Groups and select Login Items. Here you can eliminate applications that don’t need to run during startup.
Eliminate Unneeded Browser Add-Ons
Browsers, especially Chrome and Firefox, can get overloaded with add-ons. These tools can be helpful, but the exchange is sacrificing increased computer speeds.
Give your browsers a double-check and delete any add-ons that aren’t needed.
When Spotlight indexes on your Mac, significantly after you’ve updated your OS, you’ll find decreased speeds. When spotlight runs, it may get stuck while indexing.
To solve this problem, you’ll need to reindex. Go to System Preferences, click on Privacy Tab and drag your hard drive to the privacy list.
This will reindex your system and hopefully increase your speeds when finished.
Clean Your Browser Caches
Caches are the temporary data stored on your computer to speed up any browser processes for convenience. Sometimes these caches that are not needed can be deleted. Open up your browser and go to settings. There should be an option in a privacy or security tab.
It may say something like “clear cache” or “empty cache.” Emptying your cache can help increase your speeds.
Update Your OS
One of the best ways to ensure your computer is running at its optimal state is updating your OS. From the Apple, menu choose system preferences and click Software Update.
This will fix any system problems and make your computer doesn’t run as a slow Mac.
